The Concept

It began with a phone call from Volkswagen of America (VoA) requesting information about available engine performance packages for an upcoming concept car they were planning, the R-GTI. APR reputation of reliability and drivability with our turbo upgrade packages for the 1.8T qualifies APR as the only logical manufacturer of a turbo solution for the 2.0T. After several conversations about power requirements and drivability, the Stage III for the 2.0T was visualized.

APR had always planned on developing a turbo upgrade for the 2.0T, but the R-GTI was an excellent opportunity to put the project into overdrive. APR's engineers began designing and testing exhaust manifolds, intercoolers, fuel pumps, injectors, induction and boost pressure piping, MAF housings, oil and coolant lines and selecting turbochargers to meet the rapidly approaching deadline. Cutting edge parts in a short period of time made APR rely heavily on some of our in-house development tools.

APR engineers drew parts for the 2.0T Stage III kit using Pro-Engineer Wildfire CAD software. Prototypes of the new concepts were then processed using the 3-D Systems SLA machine. This rapid prototyping procedure allows for quick cast prototypes to ensure a perfect fitting final component. After the component has been verified correct, a cast metal prototype can be made if needed. During the midst of all of this the project became even more interesting as a competition was announced.

The VoA GTI Tuner Challenge was formed and APR was invited. The VoA R-GTI concept car was to be set as the standard of which all other vehicles were compared and along with APR, the top Volkswagen and VW tuners in North America were invited to pit their skills and talents against each other and Volkswagen of America.

Late nights and last minute deadlines resulted in members of APR's engineering team flying out to the Volkswagen of America's California Design Studio for the engine package installation. Arriving and leaving the same day, APR provided a turn key solution that brought the R-GTI to over 400hp.

Upon returning to the APR World Headquarters in Auburn, AL no sigh of relief was possible as now our entrant in the VoA GTI Tuner Challenge must be prepared. Continuing with a similar solution as found in the R-GTI, APR's Engineering Team began fitting the sibling to the brain child of the R-GTI, the APR Stage III. The APR Stage III is comprised of the same components as the R-GTI only no internal engine modifications are necessary. This results in a very wide powerband with peaks of 382 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque.

Upon completion of the initial prototype of the APR Stage III the first proving ground was the Streets of Willow where the Tuner Challenge was held. A dynamometer test, laps around the road course, 0-60 and braking tests were all performed and the APR Stage III equipped GTI was only bested by its big brother, the R-GTI. APR also received high marks in the styling portion of the competition with our GTI and won the overall event. APR was invited by Volkswagen of America to present our APR Stage III GTI to the world at the 2006 SEMA show in Las Vegas along side the introduction of the R-GTI.

Since winning the Tuner Challenge, APR has logged tens of thousands of miles of street and track miles testing and proving the Stage III concept. The lack of problems seen in the kit in this testing phase, especially given the incredibly short development time, is a testament to the engineering prowess of APR. GO APR!!
